# What does it mean if an eGift has a status of "Used/Expired"?

When a gift recipient selects a retailer gift card, that gift card is issued by the retailer and operates on the retailer's systems. Therefore GiftPay does not have any visibility into whether or not a recipient has actually spent that gift card or not.

Our reporting system can only indicate whether a gift card is used based on the recipient making a retailer selection.

For a used gift card, once that gift card expires, the status changes to "Used/Expired". This status will show after expiry for all gift cards, even for those that had been redeemed in full at a retailer.

Note that if a gift recipient selects a charity donation card, the status of the eGift in reports will show as "Used/Expired" immediately after the recipient has completed their donation. In some cases if the recipient donates their eGift as soon as they receive it, that eGift may show as Used/Expired in your report almost immediately after it is first delivered.
